Q: How tight (loose) should a running shoe be?
A: Generally speaking you want to have about thumb width of extra space between your big toe and the end of the shoe. This can help avoid losing toenails because your toes will avoid being squashed against the end of the shoe when running downhills or if your feet swell. The width of the shoe should feel comfortably snug but also a bit of ‘give’ for your foot to move without rubbing. Laces should be snug but not tight.
Q: How long can I expect my runners to last?
A: For most good quality runners, you should expect them to last between 300 to 500 miles of running (3 or 4 months for regular runners). This will depend your running technique, have a look at your shoes. The upper part of the shoe can often look fine but it pays to check the soles to see if they are compressed or worn down.
Q: I wear orthotics to rebalance my over pronation. Do I still need a motion control shoe?
A: You may be fine wearing a neutral shoe with your orthotics but opting for a motion control shoe may just give that extra level of support you are seeking.
Q: Can I use a trails and tracks in my road shoes?
A: Yes you can but please bear in mind, road shoes are not specifically designed for trail running so they will not have the track and grip a trail shoe is designed for.
Q: I over supinate, am I able to wear a shoe that is for over pronators?
A: This is not a good idea. It is wise to buy shoes that purpose build for the mechanical movements of your feet and body, this will help reduce the risk of injury
Q: Is it smart to race or run long distance in my new shoes?
A: It is not the best thing to do. Ideally you want to spend a good couple of weeks running in your new shoes before you do a long run or race in them. Try using them at first on your shorter runs to begin with. This will help you ‘settle in’ to the new shoes and minimise the chance the of blisters – something we all want to avoid!
